Week 10

Hi Everyone,

This week started by leaving Kalbarri and going back to Geraldton. The next day we were off again and heading towards Newman. After a day of driving, we stayed near Mount Magnet in the bush. We were planning to stay another day but the morning was so cold, (freezing) we decided to push on. The next night we stayed in the bush again and James had a bath next to the fire. Then it was onto Meekatharra where we saw a monestry and into Newman. At Meekatharra, we had lunch in the wheat silo grounds. Dad discovered that the weigh bridge, whilst closed for the season, was working. He spent a little time weighing the trailer, weight at the hitch and the car. The car came in at 3.5T, the trailer at 2.4T, with weight on the hitch around 350kg.

At Newman we stayed at Whaleback Village, at a coincidental site number one. We were surrounded by gum trees and we decided to stay for a while. In fact, that’s where we stayed for the rest of the week! There were some three hundred mine workers also staying, so there was an endless supply of trucks to amuse James.

The next three days were spent doing school work, swimming in the surprisingly cold pool and booking a mine tour. We went on a mine BHP Billiton mine tour. The used-to-be mountain that had been turned into an open cut mine was called Mount Whaleback, that’s how the caravan park got it’s name. We saw lot’s of big trucks carrying hundreds of tonnes of dirt, that is, from the lookout that we stayed at the whole tour. Once again, Dad was disappointed by the fact that we stayed on the hill instead of actually going into the mine. Everyone in the family agrees that Kalgoorlie had the best mine tour at the 'Super Pit'.

After our tour, we had dinner before the sun set so that we could drive up to Radio Hill (named after the radio station on it’s tip) and see the sun go down. Alistair took some great photos and I took a great (if I say so myself) time lapse of the sun setting.

And after that high note, week ten ended and we prepared for the next exciting week on our Journey Around Australia.
