Week 12
Hi Everyone, This week has been pretty laid back. At the start of the week, we stayed at Millstream. Alistair took heaps of pictures of the night sky. Mum and Dad should’ve spelt his name AliSTAR! The next day, we went canoeing and swimming in the river that was literally a ‘diving’ distance away from our tent. The day after, we drove down a really bumpy track, to Gregory’s Gorge. There were heaps of people camping down there, and there was a great swimming spot. We all went for a little dip. The water went up to my waist at deepest and there were plenty of stones to skip. The next day, we went for a walk, and did plenty of schoolwork. We also prepared to leave the following morning for Karatha. On the way, we passed a long iron ore train that you can see in our Week 12 Videos. It was so long that we needed to speed the movie up by eight. The average length of these trains was 3.2kms. In Karatha, the caravan park was full, so we needed to take a 10 minute drive to Dampier where we set up camp for the night. | In Karatha we went on a tour where we saw gas, iron ore and salt production. At the start of the tour, we went to the Dampier Salt Works. There was a train going by that caught everyone’s attention and not many people listened to the guide. After that, we headed towards the gas plant. On the way, the guide told us about Red Dog. Red Dog had an owner that passed away, and after this he was owned by the town. If you had Red Dog at your doorstep, then you knew that it was your turn to feed him. Red Dog went to Perth with a holidaying family, as he was waiting next to their car on departure. In Perth, the family lost Red Dog and sadly drove back to Karatha, bearing the bad news. When they got home, they saw the Red Dog had beaten them back! The buses would stop for Red Dog when they saw him waiting at a bus stop, and if there was someone sitting in Red Dog’s seat, (the front seat behind the bus driver) then they would have to move quick smart. In the end, Red Dog was killed when he ate a poisoned piece of meat meant for foxes. They are making a movie in tribute to the dog. When we reached the gas plant, we saw the size of it, and it was big! They export LPG to other countries and to Perth. The guide told us all the places that they export the gas to, and then they told us that Karatha had no gas! After the tour, we left Dampier and stayed at Port Hedland for the night. The next day, we did schoolwork. So that was week 12 on or Journey Around Australia. Cameron |
