What's New
Week 4
10/6/2011 Hi everyone, Week four started with a visit to Boulder and the sweet shop. There were so many sweets there, sherbet, ice cream, soft drink, chocolate, honeycomb, lollipops, chewing gum, nuts, and mints. In the end I got some chewing gum, Alistair got some honeycomb and Mum got some freckles. There was one thing there that I found really cool. There was chocolate in the shape of a bottle of wine, it was even the right size. I bet if you wrapped it up and gave it away as a gift, the people that you gave it to would thank you for some wine.
The next morning, the weather was terrible. We packed up our tents (in the rain) and headed off out of Kalgoorlie. We went to Wave Rock and it was like a wave that had been frozen in time. If you got a surfboard, your bathers, and got your picture taken with a black and white camera, you could convince anyone that you were a top surfer. We set up our tents and put the heaters on full blast, the tents were soaked through from all of the rain in Kalgoorlie. But by the time we got into the tents ready for bed, they were dry, (and very hot.)
The next morning, Ali and I wet for a walk to look for some birds. I was wondering why the walk was called ‘Hippo’s Yawn’ but we soon figured it out. When we reached the end of the walk, there was a giant boulder that had it’s insides eaten away by water, leaving it looking like a hippo yawning. After lunch, we took Mum and Dad on another walk, it took us up on top of a granite hill. We had a good view of the area. Then, we took a shortcut continuing over the hill to Hippo’s Yawn, it amazed me the same way it had before. Then we went back to the park. Dad decided to have the next night in a cabin because James Ali and I had all caught another cold. The cabin was just down the road. | The next morning we packed up and headed off to Esperance. First of all, we found an apartment for the week. Then we unpacked and had dinner. The next day, we went to the information centre and booked a tour on a chartered boat for next week. Then we had a look at the Esperance Museum. Esperance was actually named after the first boat to enter it’s harbour, the L’esperance, which in French means hope.
After breakfast, we went for drive across the beaches, there were some beautiful views. The sand was really white. We drove past the wind farm, and headed back into town. There, we took a visit to the ‘Tanker Jetty’ where many like to fish. You could see where people had hauled in big squids because of the ink stains. You could follow the last few minutes of each squids life. A black splash where it was landed, a trail of black to the next point and a huge splash where it said prayers.. We also saw the famous ‘Sammy the Sea lion.’ He was very friendly and would swim beside you as you walked up the jetty.
