What's New

Week 5

17/6/2011

Hello from Walpole,

That’s right, we travelled all the way from Esperance to Walpole. The week started by waking up to see the morning sunlight, seeping through the blinds. We had breakfast and made our way to the jetty (not the tanker jetty). There we hopped on a boat with about ten  others and we headed out into the bay. We had booked the cruise the previous week. First, we went to Charlie Island. There was heaps of boxthorn over there and they had put goats on the island to eat it away. But the goats ate everything but the boxthorn! One of the tour guides, threw fish into the water and we saw sea eagles swoop in and take it away to eat. Sometimes, a sneaky seagull would come in and take the fish, you would then see a sea eagle chasing it.

Next, we went past a couple of tiny islands where sealions sunbaked, I was surprised by how high they could get up the island. Then we had Woody Island in our sights. Woody Island in the third biggest island in the archipelago of Esperance. We had to go around it to find the jetty so that we could get onto the island. There, the adults had biscuits and tea or coffee, while Ali and I had the biscuits. We then went on a bushwalk with one of the tour guides halfway up the mountain. I decided to keep going with Alistair and Dad but we soon turned around once we got to a look out and saw how high the island actually was. After that, it was back to Esperance.

We rested at the cabin until it was late in the afternoon. Then, Ali, Dad, James and I went to the bird observatory. There was a long boardwalk that went to a lake where there were hundreds of ducks. James enjoyed the walk back, even though he fell over twice. The next day, Dad, Ali and I, went on a tour of the port. We saw how they loaded iron ore, wheat, sulfur and other things onto the boats, to take to other countries. We learnt that they are planning to cut down hundreds of trees to turn into woodchips, and then export. After the tour, we went back to the cabins for the night. The next morning, we drove to Lucky Bay, the whitest beach in Australia in 2008. The ocean was clear, and even though we weren’t even halfway up Australia, it looked like a tropical beach. We headed back to the cabins after eating lunch.

The next morning, we left Esperance and went out to Bremer Bay. There, we saw a single wind turbine that gives power to the town. Next, we went down to the beach where whales usually are. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any. So we headed off to our caravan park where, once again, we were in a cabin. The next morning, we went to Albany, which was a bigger town than I had expected. We went food shopping at the massive Coles there and found our caravan park.
